This is my third brush with this author - the Shadow of the Leviathan’s second book coming out prompted me to pick up this earlier trilogy this year. I’d read The City of Stairs from the Divine Cities trilogy (and enjoyed it!) but had bounced off the second book in the trilogy (maybe more due to timing than the book itself; I think I was in the height of grad school when I picked it up).

The magic system! What a neat idea. Convincing reality that it must be something else (or behave in some other way) opens up so many fun possibilities. I tore through this book quickly, reading mostly for plot, but along the way I did find the characters sharply drawn with their own unique voices.
